My Rose Of Summer

My small garden patches are not well cared for. I am just not skilled in horticulture. My pink royal rose bush, although being under attack by a bug that favours roses, managed to produce this one flower.

The rose bud appears.

Summer Solstice
First Day Of Summer

Sunday 22 June 2014
Full bloom

Already the rose is showing its age and soon its brief show of colourful bravado will be history.

All is not lost, however. The bush has future roses in the making.

More roses to come soon.

Bay Of Quinte Sights

I had lunch at my friend Kathy's yesterday. She's the one that has all the wonderful sunrise photos. You can see why by the east view that she enjoys.

Right now the blue herons are visiting often because they have spotted a family of chipmunks on her property and she is constantly chasing them away. Alas, the herons are skilled hunters, and a little chipmunk was seen flying away firmly gripped in one's long beak. The cycle of life for that chipmunk was shortened, but the heron gets to live another day and perhaps feed its young with the catch.

This mallard duck was spotted enjoying the small area of shade along the water's edge. Kathy will put out some cracked corn later for the females and their ducklings.

The mute swans also had their little ones on display out front of Kathy's home. (This picture was not taken at the same time as the above pics but a little earlier in June.) Photo by Kathy Jerome.

This little sparrow chick looks like it might be out of the nest too early, but later it was spotted flying away with its mother. That bird feeder has been quite a window into the life of birds and their rites of passage as they have their young and raise them nearby. All it takes is a bird bath and some bird seed and voila! a real life drama unfolds just beyond the window.

Here, an assortment of birds are checking out the water in the bird bath. Note the robin in the corner seeming to object to the shenanigans.

Finally, I have my first royal rose.

Some sort of rose eating bug is decimating the leaves on the plant, so I am off in search of something that will halt its progress.

I have added links to a few more songs I have released on YouTube. I hope you can find some time to listen to them. Stay tuned!
